This summer, during a conference call among PR execs for ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC, conversation turned to the Television Critics Assn. press tour. The reps floated thoughts on how to maximize their investments in the biannual event. One idea stuck: limiting the broadcast-executive Q&A sessions - a cornerstone of both the summer and winter tours - to the summer. As a result, the Big Four told TCA leaders last month that they would pull their chiefs from winter-tour executive sessions.

Informing members of the decision, TCA president Amber Dowling wrote in a Nov. 29 note, "As ever, we encourage you to let the networks know how much you value executive sessions in both summer and winter."

Three days later, Fox doubled back, saying it would host an executive session after all. ABC, CBS, and NBC are holding firm.

In a recent poll, 60% of TCA journalists said they value twiceyearly press conferences. …
