UNITED STATES Hosts More Than 1 Million International Students; Number of U.S. Students Studying Abroad Tops 313,000

There are now more than 1 million international students enrolled in U.S. higher education, with 1,043,839 international students studying in the United States In 2015-16, according to the 2016 Open Doors report published by the Institute of International Education (HE) in partnership with the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

This is the 10th consecutive year that Open Doors has reported expansion in the total number of international students in the United States.

China remains the top sending country. But for the second year in a row, the largest growth was in the number of students from India, primarily at the graduate level and in optional practical training (OPT).

Large increases in international students were seen from several countries with government scholarship programs for overseas study. …
