OBITUARIES: Peter McNeely Fyfe

Peter McNeely Fyfe, 92 years old, May 7, 2016, after a long illness, in hospice care, in Nashville, Tenn. He was born August 23, 1923, in Covington, Tenn., and showed musical talent at an early age. During high school he played the organ for Sunday services at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church in his hometown. He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 and played a pump organ for chapel services in the North African campaign and was interim organist for the American Church in Cairo. After the war, he received degrees from the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago (MMus, 1949) and Union Theological Seminary in New York City (MSM, 1951). Fyfe spent 35 years as organist-choirmaster of Christ Episcopal Church (now Cathedral) in downtown Nashville and taught for four decades as adjunct organ professor at the Blair School of Music of Vanderbilt University. …
