Obituaries: Derek Webster 1930 -2016

Harold Derek Webster, who died in February, was a past member of the IAJRC. He attended Manchester Grammar School and then worked for the Inland Revenue, probably as the most honest and hippest Tax Inspector in Britain. He loved nature, which included exploring the Scottish Highlands, and his great interests included literature, astronomy, naval history, the American Civil War and - jazz.

As an avid record collector Derek was very active on the Manchester jazz scene for several decades. He was a stalwart of the Manchester Jazz Society for many years. He made numerous presentations there (I recall being present for his two-hour tribute to Jess Stacy, one of his particular favourites) and at several other societies in the region, especially Sheffield.

He had connections with many musicians, some of whom stayed with him when playing in the area. In 1985 and 1988 he was on the organising committee for the Duke Ellington Conferences held in Oldham, near Manchester. …
