Director Garth Davis singles out keys to the film's success

arth Davis makes his feature directing debut with "Lion," The Weinstein Co. release. Luke Davies scripted from the autobiographical book by Saroo Brierley, who was lost in Kolkota, adopted by an Australian couple, and eventually hunted online to find his original home. Davis spoke with Variety about some of his key artisans on the film.

CINEMATOGRAPHY, GREIG FRASER

I envisioned the movie in two halves, yin and yang. We wanted the first half to be as visceral as possible, to put viewers inside the head of Saroo, to know what it's like to be lost on the streets of India. In Australia, we needed to bring back India through texI tures and experiences. A lot of discussions were about how we could visually tell those two halves. The aerials shots in the film were a big part of this. Saroo told me he would lie in bed imagining he would fly home to India. So the aerials were like his spirit going home - as well as making that connection to Google Earth.

EDITING, ALEXANDRE DE FRANCESCHI

The scene - finding his home on Google Earth - was tricky; a lot of planning and storyboarding went into it. There is nothing worse than looking at computers in movies; but it's not about computers, it's about finding your home. We had to cut it in a way where we're emotionally engaged.

Alexandre would be getting rushes in Australia, and at the end of each day, he would write very passionate reports about what was working, what was missing, what he was excited about.
