A CHANGE OF SCENERY

Her big leap Moving from a corporate operations role focused on innovation in Bethesda, MD, to a sales and marketing executive position in Hong Kong in 2013.

She raised her hand "I figured it was a long shot. With kids (two sons, ages 6 and 8) and a husband, moving across the world seemed a bit out of the question. The leap from my last role to being a chief sales and marketing officer also seemed to be a significant jump within the company, but I figured I would try."

Learning it all, anew "Everything about coming to Asia was a stretch: new languages, currencies, new economic environment and consumer buying behaviors to learn. There was a new schedule-work all day and conference call with the U.S. most nights. At home, there was a new neighborhood, learning to drive on the opposite side of the road, new schools for the kids."

Difficult parts Managing dual careers. She and her husband "spent many weeks on opposite sides of the world in the first year, but one of us was always with the kids. This took an incredible amount of logistical planning."

What's the secret? "We have a massive floor-to-ceiling annual calendar in our kitchen where we plan out the entire year before it even begins." Small steps helped. "It was so overwhelming to think about all the changes that it was easier to just dive in and take it day by day."

How did the kids react? "They embraced all of the change right along with us. Kids are resilient. Their world is what you as parents make it."

Advice for others "Don't overthink it. Take the leap and see where it takes you."

GOING GLOBAL

Nicole Zukowski, vice president of global operations for NYX Cosmetics, a subsidiary of L'Oréal

Her big leap Switching from a manufacturing role to a global supply-chain position this past October, and moving from New Jersey to Southern California.

What it has been like "Fast-paced! The brand NYX was acquired by L'Oréal in 2014 and is one of the fastest-growing color cosmetics brands in the United States. We're in charge of ramping up what's basically an indie beauty brand and turning it into a global beauty brand. …
