The LaGuardia Community College Foundation has received $225,000 from the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation to fund the Robert Gardiner-Joseph Shenker Scholars Program, named in honor of the late Robert David Lion Gardiner, a former Wall Street executive and heir to Long Island's Gardiner's Island and the late Joseph Shenker, the first president of UGuardia Community College.

Each year over the next three years, a new group of Gardiner-Shenker student scholars will develop research projects that illuminate the history of the New York City metropolitan area - focusing on a theme, such as infrastructure, immigration or housing. Faculty and staff at the LaGuardia and Wagner Archives will guide the students through their work. The Archives, a repository for the city's social and political history, are housed on the LaGuardia Community College campus.

The Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has received a $1.7 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to examine the sustainability of family planning programs in urban areas of Nigeria. The grant program is under the direction of llene Speizer, a research professor of maternal and child health at the university.

Eighteen colleges and universities in the state of Michigan have received a total of $506,191 in grants as part of the Campus Sexual Assault Grant Program funded by the state legislature. The goal of the grant program is to fund the development of new and innovative programs to reduce and/or eliminate sexual assault on college campuses.

The schools include: Central Michigan University; Concordia University; Davenport University; Delta College, Eastern Michigan University; Finlandia University; Grand Valley State University; Henry Ford College; Kalamazoo College, lake Superior State University; Lawrence Technological University; Macomb Community College; Michigan State University; the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor; the University of Michigan-Dearborn; University of Michigan-Flint; Wayne State University; and Western Michigan University.

West Virginia University has received a gift from Mohindar Seehra, the Eberly Family Distinguished Professor of Physics at the university, to fund the Seehra Lecture series. The lecture series will support the professional development of women graduate students and researchers and will be administered by the Center for Women's and Gender Studies at the university.

The Avon Foundation for Women has announced a $200,000 grant program to enable 20 colleges and universities to participate in a two-day conference to help those institutions develop and implement action plans to prevent and respond to sexual assaults on campus. …
