Vets with PTSD Could Upgrade Discharges

A section of the 2017 Defense Authorization Act would make it simpler for troops diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder or traumatic brain injury to upgrade their other-than-honorable discharges. It is an objective supported by VFW.

"It would ease the burden of proof for veterans who are struggling from PTSD or TBI as a result of deployments to a combat zone or military sexual trauma," said Raymond C. Kelley, director of VFW's National Legislative Service.

"These discharges have multiple negative effects. Veterans have difficulties finding meaningful employment, access to quality health care, especially mental health care and other benefits afforded to vets with honorable discharges."
