One Young World - Walking Away with a Fresh Perspective and a Challenge

Alongside 1300 young leaders from over 190 countries, last month I had the incredible opportunity to travel to Ottawa, Canada to attend the One Young World Summit; a summit which brings together world leaders and youth to learn, discuss and debate the pressing global issues that we are faced with today.

With the summit opening on the grounds of Canada's Parliament, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called on us to 'create a future we will all be proud of,' closely followed by Sir Bob Geldof's grounding words on the challenges we are currently facing in an uncertain economic and political landscape, it was clear that the summit was going to be thought provoking, challenging and inspiring.

Over the next 4 days I was surrounded by forward-thinkers, progressive leaders and youth on the forefront of social innovation, from every corner of the world; converging on topics such as refugeeism, extremism, peace and security, education, global business, gender equality, LBGTQ and mental health. Some of these topics I had not known a great deal about, and others had not resonated as they now did by hearing first hand: a delegate from Micronesia express the effect of climate change on her country; a delegate from Jordan speak about training 12,000 women in self- defence; and a discussion over dinner with a delegate from Mozambique who is working to combat the 50% of girls who are married before their 18th birthdays.

Having been engaged in social causes throughout my life, a session which resonated with me most strongly was hearing from Nobel Peace Prize winner Professor Muhammad Yunus, the founder of Microfinance. …
