As we gather in Washington, DC for the American Council on Education's 97th Annual Meeting, it is the perfect occasion to reflect on how far we have come and how far we still have to go to accomplish the goals of higher education.

The meeting's theme, "Promises to Keep: Higher Education and the Public Trust," resonates particularly well with this special issue of The Presidency, which focuses on student outcomes.

As deep state disinvestment and the lingering effects of the Great Recession have kept both costs and unemployment at elevated levels over the past few years, academe has come under extra scrutiny as graduates strive to find rewarding and remunerative work.

Such attention is ironic, given that the more light is shined on outcomes, the more brightly our institutions tend to shine. In this issue, for example:
