Article excerpt

NASP recently provided consultation and content expertise for the FRONTLINE: Growing Up Trans Professional Development Collection, newly released by PBS LearningMedia. The collection of video clips and accompanying viewing guides from the FRONTLINE documentary were developed to provide educators a deeper understanding of gender identity and the personal experiences oftrans youth and their families. School psychologists will find these new materials valuable for use in undergraduate and graduate level courses, continuing professional development offerings, or with parent or faculty discussion groups in schools. To lay a foundation on the topic, a detailed pre-viewing guide is included with reflection questions, definitions of key terms, an annotated list of the video clips, best practices recommendations for schools, and links to additional references and resources. The stories of five trans students and their families are described in eight video clips from the full-length documentary. Each video clip has a customized short viewing guide with a description of the video, pre- and post-viewing reflection questions, and vocabulary and terms. The stories in the video excerpts cover a wide range of issues and challenges faced by trans students and their families:

Daniel is a 9-year-old who has been living as a boy since the age of 6. The first clip highlights the strong parental support Daniel has received and his parents' decision to follow his lead at a young age regarding his gender identity, despite their fears and the pressures of society. Daniel's story continues in a second video as he experiences anxiety about changes to his body that are starting to happen as he nears puberty. Daniel's parents struggle to remain supportive while learning about the possible impact of halting the puberty process with hormone blockers.

Ariel is a 13-year-old who lived in secret as a girl before she transitioned. Her first video clip highlights the confusion and difficulty transgender youth can experience in their early years as they grapple with their gender identity and the importance of strong family support and acceptance. Ariel's story continues in a second video as she begins life in a new town and new school. Her story highlights the role of positive peer support, but also shows some of the challenges that transgender students can face fitting in, even with extensive support from family and friends. …
