Women Veterans: Contributions and Challenges

Happy Women's History Month! We celebrate this month to remember the women who stepped forward to fight inequality, break down barriers and pave the way for future generations. Please take a moment to honor all women throughout history for their sacrifices and accomplishments. Also, pause to reflect on the women who served and still are serving in the military, who helped shape this country. We honor them for their support, strength and willingness to sacrifice everything for the freedom and liberty we all enjoy today.

As a female veteran, I understand firsthand the sacrifices women must make, and I appreciate the giant strides made by women in the military throughout history. But there is still much work to do.

The VFW is doing its part by fighting for legislation that offers benefits female veterans have earned and deserve. Check out Command Post in this edition of the magazine and read what VFW Commander-in-Chief Brian Duffy says about the many ways the VFW is working in conjunction with the VA to ensure the nation's female veteran healthcare needs are met.

I highly recommend the articles in this edition that highlight concerns of many female veterans. In two articles, Janie Dyhouse addresses homelessness among female veterans and organizations that are helping them. She finds that more than 4,000 women veterans are homeless. Even though overall veteran homelessness is decreasing, the number of female veterans without a place to live is increasing. She interviews a few women who have been instrumental in furthering efforts to reduce homelessness and help those veterans get back on their feet. …
