Notwithstanding the enormous increase in the availability of previously unknown repertoire, in the concert hall and on commercial recordings, it is still a refreshing experience to encounter music by a great composer that is both quite unfamiliar to the general music-lover and to the record-collector and which is eminently worth-while.

Not that any of the works on this very well-played and recorded new Naxos CD is a forgotten masterpiece, but it encompasses one of the musical by-ways of Russia's greatest composer in a manner to which music-lovers should respond warmly.

One sometimes hears the complaint that Tchaikovsky was unsure of the piano as a medium, but to those who know and love his piano music, such criticisms are easily disproved. …
