CHRISTMAS AYRES AND DANCES: Eighteen Easy to Moderate Carols for Organ, Chamber Organ, Harpsichord, or Piano. Concordia, 2011. 97-7407. 51 pp. $30.00. As one who loves and plays all of the instruments mentioned in the title, I agree with it! (How much ink has been spilled over the "correct instrument" for the performance of 18th-century English voluntaries presented "for organ, harpsichord, or piano"?) Instrumental crossover, or spillover, is natural, at least to a degree. These pieces really, truly, do work on a variety of instruments. Greene expressly relates them to the Hausmusik of the German Baroque, and cites for his precedent Buxtehude's treatment of "Auf meinen lieben Gott" as a dance suite. None of these pieces requires pedal, though I think pedal could be used in some cases ad libitum. The French manner is on display, to fine effect, in "Es ist ein Ros Chaconne. …
