It's the passion that gets us first. We spend countless hours perfecting our technique and learning to become artists. As teachers, we build on what our own teachers gave us. Then, when we open our first studio or form a company, we sometimes hit the wall. Suddenly we need business skills.

Too often, the business side of dance gets short shrift. We might bring in a family member to handle the front desk and to keep the books and think we've got it covered. That's why this month Dance Teacher has devoted a Special Section to the topic, "Habits of a Successful Studio Owner" (page 38). A successful leader holds the vision for a studio business.
