Edward Jones and Baylor to Offer Students New Educational Avenues

Creating well-rounded, high-achieving business majors is the initial goal of a new active learning program to be introduced at the Hankamer School of Business next fall. The ultimate goal, of course, is to produce quality business graduates for tomorrow's marketplace. Edward Jones, the St. Louis-based financial services firm, and Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business are partnering to present The Edward Jones New Venture Challenge.

"The Edward Jones program will "redefine both the learning style and reward structure for students, which in turn will encourage a higher level of motivation and achievement in those who participate," says Associate Dean Jeff Tanner. "Active learning conveys knowledge by 'doing' rather than just transferring information through lectures and reading. This learning style enables our faculty to deliver more content that students are able to retain more easily."

Based on the concepts and strategies covered in core business courses, students will work in teams on venture projects to create new businesses or develop business solutions for either existing ventures or simulations. They will interact with visiting Edward Jones associates and, in some instances, will address case studies based on real situations and challenges faced by Edward Jones. The core classes in which the Edward Jones New Venture Challenge will be incorporated are Introduction to Business, Information Systems-Microcomputer Applications, Managerial Accounting, Principles of Finance, Principles of Marketing, Production/Operations Management, and Strategic Management & Business Policy. …
