July Is Our Memorable Month

For as long as there has been schooling there has always been that time of year that youngsters truly look forward to - summer recess. This usually begins the last week of June and runs through Labor Day weekend. But those of you with children know, like I do, that once August arrives the "back to school" mentality begins to creep in as fast as the sale on notebooks, pads, three-ring binders and the "almost totally forgotten protractor" begins at your local retail store. So if you've followed my "new math logic that leaves July exclusively for those of us in the park and recreation field.

July brings more people to park and recreation facilities than any other month. The Fourth of July also happens to be the one day where it seems like everyone is at a park. We estimate that 75 percent of the population goes to a park on the 4th of July - a staggering 192 million people. Think of the impact that park and recreation activities have on people all across the country. And think how we can best promote our yearlong activities to those in the community who only visit the local park on this special occasion.

July can also be thought of as a family month. Over the years we have encouraged Family Fun Days - activities for families to recreate together. …
