A friend of mine has been fighting brain cancer for five years or so now. Meet her in the street by chance and ask her how she's doing, and she replies energetically, with a broad, bright smile, "I'm doing terrific. How are you?"

Most of us know someone with a remarkable positive attitude in the face of a major illness or some other terrible burden. These uncanonized saints often help their own condition by their state of mind. They are powerful constructive forces in other people's lives, as well, and was there ever more of a need for positive role models!

How far the human spirit can soar was on display at several sessions I happened to attend at the recent ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting in Las Vegas. First there was keynote speaker Bernard S. Siegel, M.D., physician, surgeon, and best-selling author (Love, Medicine, and Miracles), who related experiences to prove that a positive frame of mind is one of the most powerful medicines anyone can take. He urged pharmacists to be aware of this mindbody connection in the healing process.

Then there was Kathryn Grant, Pharm. D., who talked at Arizona's College of new type of clin Tucson. Under where she works at Arizona's calls the Program for Integrative Medicine, the clinic is trying ton.
