Pharmacists Using E-Mail Network to Keep in Touch

Maryland pharmacist has rigged up an e-mail network so that he can quickly share with colleagues news and views about developments that impact their profession, whether they're in Canada, India, New Zealand, or the U.S. of A.

Pharmalist is the brainchild of Ed Kerns, who owns St. Johns Pharmacy in Hollywood, Md. Launched last October, the e-mail network now has more than 30 members around the world. A self-admitted technology geek, Kerns shells out the $20 a month it takes to host the free discussion group.

Kerns hopes that Pharmalist will become a vehicle for doing good. He would like members to be able to move medications from areas of abundance to colleagues where such drugs are in short supply. "I was communicating with a person in New Zealand," he said. "She had a friend with multiple sclerosis who had to move to Australia to get Interferon. I thought it would be something if we could get pharmacists communicating so that we could figure out how to get the product to underserved areas. …
