EDITOR'S NOTE: The educational opportunities available through NACM are endless. As testimony to the continuous achievements of our association's members, in the next few issues of Business Credit, we will share their thoughts and views about what NACM, its staff and educational programs have done to enhance their professional development.

For years, all of the talk of corporate takeovers and downsizing were distant stories of other organizations. After 101 years of family ownership, the company I had grown to love was sold to a large California firm. I now worked for a company that was publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

I had long considered myself an above average credit manager, measuring my performance through DSOs and collection ratios. I knew I could play ball in the major leagues but I wasn't sure they would notice or even care for that matter. It was then that I decided to brush up on my skills and obtain my professional designations from NACM.

I had heard of the programs and knew a couple of credit managers with the CCE designation. Kerry Kelly of the Baltimore Sun and William Lovitt of Advo were instrumental in encouraging me to follow through with my studies and sit for each of the exams. …
