Manon Rheaume Becomes First Woman to Attend NHL Camp

MANON RHEAUME BECOMES FIRST WOMAN TO ATTEND NHL CAMP.

In September, Manon Rheaume made sports history by attending training camp with the Tampa Bay Lightning (NHL expansion team). Training camp will result in an NHL tryout - the first for a woman.

The 17 minutes Rheaume played back in 1991 earned her a multi-buck offer to pose nude for Playboy, to which Rheaume said an emphatic No! "No matter what money they offered me. I would say no."

Rheaume, from Quebec City, has dear career aspirations, and they are with the NHL, not Playboy.

She has already broken new ice by playing on a men's hockey team and living to talk about it. "The guys thought it was unusual at first," she said of her time with the Draveurs. "But they just saw me as a goalie on the ice, not a girl. They respected me."

Asked if women are being taken seriously enough in hockey, Rheaume said, "It's better than it was 10 years ago." In fact, as a result of Canada's win two years in a row in world hockey, there's now talk of women's hockey becoming an official sport in the Olympics, a big step forward as Rheaume sees it. …
