Katie Jerabek survived cancer and an amputated leg, yet she still plays softball and skis. She's also president of her school's German club, a student athletic trainer for her school's varsity football team and treasurer of her church's youth group. And her grades are near perfect.

Jerabek is just one of nine winners of the 1999 Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarships, sponsored by the credit card company in cooperation with the American Association of School Administrators. The annual awards are given to high school juniors who achieve beyond academics and show outstanding effort in at least four of five areas-special talents, leadership, obstacles overcome, community service and unique endeavors. The winners travel with their families to Washington, D.C., for the awards ceremony, where they also have the opportunity to tour the Capitol and the White House.

The scholarships are $20,000 for the Gold Award, $15,000 for the Silver Award and $10,000 for the Bronze Award and cover all areas of education, including career and technical schools and programs. …
