How Much Internet Use Is Job-Related?

Where I work, some of the employees are using the Internet for purposes unrelated to their jobs. They're browsing, shopping, chatting and playing games online when they're supposed to be working. Is this going on everywhere?

A number of readers have written about Internet use on the job, so we asked people from several organizations what's happening where they work.

What we're hearing is that the Internet is such an engaging new medium, it's hard for people (especially those who use it for their jobs) to resist using it for personal reasons as well. But if too many employees are perceived to be wasting time on the Web, this could lead to a .crackdown" and stricter rules for access.

One company said it would monitor Internet use only if an abuse was suspected. A state agency reported that because Web surfing has become "a big concern," many employees would have limited access or no access to the Internet. …
