What the Savory Mediterranean Diet Does for Your Heart

Why is the Mediterranean-style diet so beneficial in preventing heart disease? A four-year study, published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, answers this question. Researchers studied a group of 400 men and women in Lyon, France, who had suffered a heart attack and thus were at risk of another.

Half of the participants in the Lyon study followed the Mediterranean diet, which is rich in fruits, vegetables, cereals, fish and beans-but uses a fair amount of fat. The other half ate a more traditional Western diet but was relatively low in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol.

It turned out that those who followed the Mediterranean diet were 50-70 percent less likely than the comparison group to develop recurrent heart disease. This led the researchers to conclude that the fat in the Mediterranean diet actually served as a "heart protectant. …
