A LITTLE HISTORY

It was at a regular meeting of the Carolinas chapter, recalled Jim Spivey, of C.J. Spivey Associates, Inc. in charlotte, North Carolina, and past national RIMS president, that a group of member suggested it would be nice to get together for a weekend and talk about mutual problems. This get-tougher took place in 1970, where 12 members met for three days.

"There was no formal agenda," said Mr. Spivey. "Discussions were informal, and attendees did most of their own cooking." In 1972, when Mr. Spivey was president of the Carolinas Chapter, a more formal education conference was organized, with about 80 delegates attending.

The conference steadily grew, and was eventually opened up to include brokers and vendors. "My favorite part of the conference is the mingling with the other members and invites," said David Copen, executive director at Forsyth County in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who has attended the conference since 1971 and, along with Grant Whitney, Jim Spivey, Ed Lloyd, David Fralin and Alan Heaton, was honored in this year's gala opening ceremony.
