The risk manager's job will continue to evolve and, because of the new responsibilities it will entail, a more appropriate title for the function may be "financial service advisor," suggested Craig Gass, vice president, Alexander Q Alexander, at "Risk Management in the 21st Century," a breakfast seminar sponsored by the New York Chapter of RIMS.

Mr. Gass said risk management will encompass much more than insurance-buying in the future, including risk funding, quality assurance and insurance management. As a result, risk managers will need to have a strong understanding of their companies' business and to keep in step with the financial services industry, he said.

Risk management departments will continue to suffer cutbacks, Mr. Gass said, but the evolution of the job will lead to its acceptance as part of senior management.

H. Felix Kloman, editor and publisher of Risk Management Reports, said risk managers should focus on risk control and risk assessment in the future, not on overseeing suppliers. …
