What Makes Tea Such a Healthy Choice

There's been a lot in the news about the health benefits of tea against major illnesses such as cancer and heart disease. If you haven't sorted out which of the teas work best-and why--@here's what we've learned:

THE REPORTED

HEALTH BENEFITS

are associated with teas made from the plant Camellia sinensis-the

"real" teas, as opposed to herbal varieties. Green tea, black tea, Chinese tea and fruit-flavored tea (with and without lemon, milk or sugar) all qualify as disease fighters, but instant teas and prepared iced teas are too highly processed to be of much help.

THE "POLYPHENOL"

CHEMICALS in tea appear to be the magic ingredient because they act as antioxidants, helping to prevent cell damage caused by the so-called "free-radical" molecules. The polyphenols in green tea are especially potent.

SO FAR, MOST OF THE
