A Calendar from 'The Land of the Sky'

Readers will remember that I wasn't very complimentary in the November issue to the 2000 calendar recently published by the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore (MD). I remarked that I thought they'd have a lot of remainders at the price of $8.

Now comes in the mail a much more attractive 2000 calendar, issued by the Asheville-Buncombe Library system in North Carolina. It's titled "Celebrating Readers and Writers in 'The Land of the Sky,'" and is 8 1/2 by 11 inches with the requisite little boxes to put your appointments in, and even has a hole punched so you can hang it on the wall.

It's obvious that a tremendous amount of research and writing has gone into the production of this calendar, with all sorts of pictures of authors, and some old library scenes ("The Colored Public Library") on each page facing the monthly calendar. Some authors, like Carl Sandburg, 0. Henry and Thomas Wolfe, have pages to themselves, with notes explaining their connections to Asheville. …
