Getting actively involved in the political process is the only sure way to guarantee veterans rights.

A politically active VFW member is the most effective electoral weapon the organization has in its arsenal.

COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF At all levels of the organization, VFW members John W. Smart are currently engaged in the voting process. Crucial presidential primaries are on the horizon, and we have to be prepared to fully participate. With that in mind, numerous activities are under way to visibly demonstrate the VFW's involvement.

How is VFW participating in the primary process? We are doing so by: * Creating brochures for key presidential primaries.

* Conducting. a nationwide education program so members can ask informed questions of candidates.

* Hosting town hall forums for presidential candidates.

* Supporting voter registration drives and Get Out the Vote campaigns (phone trees/banks and transportation. to the polls, for example.)

* Attending presidential candidate functions and posing relevant questions. *Meeting with presidential candidates one-on-one. (A meeting has already been held with George Bush, Jr.; one is scheduled with John McCain. And responses from Al Gore, Bill Bradley and Steve Forbes are pending.)

* Maintaining regular contact with candidates.

Planning to attend national conventions of the major political parties.

While VFW Posts and Departments cannot endorse candidates for any office, individual members have a vested interest in getting involved in the political process. …
