Welcome to a new millennium and to a new volume year for the Journal. Among the themes appropriate to a new millennium is innovation. In this issue there are indeed innovations to report and content well worth your attention.

In "Metadata and ISO 9000 Compliance," authors Wendy Duff of Canada and Sue McKemmish of Australia focus effectively on the meaning of metadata, its importance in evolving standards like the Australian Standard 4390, metadata in the ISO 9000 context, and projects testing metadata models. Large or small, any organization doing business internationally - or expecting to - will need to become certified ("registered" in the language of the standard) to the requirements of ISO 9000.

In his research-based article "Employing Records Professionals in the Information Age," Richard J. Cox has analyzed a sample of job descriptions and advertisements for entry-level positions over a 20-year period. The assumption that such postings - in print and on the Internet - would increasingly call for persons skilled in new records systems is not supported by the research findings. This and other findings in Cox's study challenge our assumptions.
