The board of directors of the Society of Professional Journalists met on Sept. 11 during the 2003 SPJ National Convention in Tampa, Fla. Highlights from the meeting follow.

* Board members approved the minutes from the spring meetings. Approved minutes are available online at www.spj.org.

* The group paused at 8:46 a.m. for a moment of silence to reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, and to honor two journalists and SPJ members who died in past weeks.

* Executive Director Terry Harper informed the group about a bequest made to SPJ to provide scholarships to students. The board voted to transfer the funds to the Sigma Delta Chi Foundation to set up a scholarship fund.

* A financial discussion centered on ways to expand the organization's revenue streams beyond membership dues as a primary source of funding. A committee was formed to consider potential financial strategies and ideas and present a report to the Executive Committee in January 2004 and to the full board in April.

* Deputy Executive Director Julie Grimes updated the group on results of the 2003 professional chapter evaluations based on the star system rankings. Twenty-one of SPJ's 78 active professional chapters achieved a four-star chapter ranking for work done in 2002-2003. Eight chapters received a one-star ranking. Chapters that did not submit an annual report will now be ranked as one-star chapters and will be notified of their status.

* Upon a recommendation from Region 5 Director Vicky Whitaker, the board voted to revoke the charter of the Central Illinois Pro Chapter. …
