DAYTONA BEACH, FL -- A city task force will be appointed to plan an annual gathering of Black college students as a result of a dispute between the Chamber of Commerce and a private Black group.

Shawn Collins, president of nonprofit Black College Reunion Inc., accused white residents of trying to run out the Black students by claiming they engage in rowdy behavior. City Commissioner Steve Miller said the Black collegians and alumni act no worse than white students on spring break.

A chamber committee recently voted to change the name of the 10-year-old event from Black College Reunion to Heritage Festival. Upset by that decision, Collins' group announced plans to take over the reunion.

Within hours, the committee chairman resigned and the committee disbanded.

"I'm sad to say that the Black community of this town cannot come together and do what's best for the entire community," said Sylvester Covington, who quit as head of the chamber group. …
