The name Arthur Ashe Jr. evokes standards of intellectual and athletic excellence that transcend boundaries and time. If we are fortunate, each generation will have the privilege of coming in contact with such a person. Ashe followed in the very large footsteps of Paul Robeson and Jackie Robinson.

To Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe -- who granted us permission to name this academic awards program after her husband -- Bill Cox and I give our heartfelt thanks. If we can carry out the task of recognizing these scholarathletes with a fraction of the decorum associated with her and her late husband, we will have accomplished a great deal.

To the awardees and nominees, the honor of participating in the inaugural Arthur Ashe Jr. Awards is a distinction you should carry as a source of inspiration for the rest of your lives. When you look up the word "courage" in the dictionary it should say Arthur Ashe Jr. For those of you who are not as familiar with the legacy that you now share, I encourage you to get personal copies of Ashe's books "Days of Grace" and "A Hard Road to Glory. …
