National Campaign to Stop Building At Har Homa/Jabal Abu Ghneim

Several groups called for an emergency educational teach-in in 100 U.S. communities on the question of Israel's continued confiscation of Palestinian land to build settlements exclusively for Jews. While this practice is explicitly against the Fourth Geneva Convention (1949), which both the U.S. and Israel have signed, and while the U.S. admits that it is an obstacle to peace, the confiscations continue, even after the Oslo agreements and perhaps under cover of the so-called Hebron redeployment. The Har Homa settlement would be part of a ring of settlements around Jerusalem aimed at pre-empting any possibility of a negotiated solution to the status of Jerusalem.

The organizers make several suggestions for local teach-ins: showing "Seeds of War," a 15-minute video on the isue of Jabal Abu Ghneim, just released at the end of February this year, followed by a discussion on possible actions to stop the settlement from being built; circulating a petition urging Israel to halt all settlement activity, including Har Homa; beginning an email/fax/telephone/letter campaign to President Clinton and Secretary of State Madeline Albright, asking them to pressure Israel to halt the building of Har Homa; organizing a demonstration in front of local Israeli consulates; writing letters to the editor and op eds on the issue in local newspapers; informing local media about the teach-in. …
