In October, the Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) launched its TechCareer Compass, a comprehensive information and communication technology (ICT) free career guidance web tool.

According to CompTIA, this new tool was born out of a need to address the growing mismatch between job skills and skill requirements in the ICT workplace. It is intended to provide students, teachers, employers and ICT professionals with a resource to enable ICT career mapping.

"The CompTIA TechCareer Compass addresses the specific needs of new entrants to the ICT industry, job seekers, employers, career advisors, as well as training providers and curriculum developers," says Neill Hopkins, vice president of workforce development and training at CompTIA. "For example, employers can use the tool to write up job descriptions, locate training and educational materials, identify qualified candidates and design employee career maps."

Subject-matter experts who provided input to the TechCareer Compass include IBM, Cisco and CompuCom.

Cisco Systems Workforce Development Manager Peter Joyce says the new tool will make finding and retaining appropriately trained and certified ICT professionals much easier. …
