The authors of these sumptuous volumes, one an American and the other an Australian, tell us in their brief words of introduction that they embarked on their ambitious project because the value systems and, therefore, the ceremonies of celebration of the many subjects they depict are under severe danger of erosion and disappearance in our urban world of today; and in this, of course, these two photographers and their publishers are right.

The results are certainly impressive. In their two massive volumes, they give us many photographs of various ceremonial occasions and altogether, if with lapses into a most untraditional vulgarity, provide a spacious caravanserai of strange moments in daily life and succeed, with the evidently enthusiastic help of many plump and sumptuous maidens, suitably undressed for the occasion, to recall the memoirs of travellers of long ago. …
