What do your academic colleagues know about vocational education? With tech prep consortia springing up around the country, it's now even more important to enlighten these teachers and garner their support.

Easy to say, difficult to do? Not necessarily. By employing the fundamental concepts of publicity, cultivating a few selling skills and engaging in some old-fashioned ingenuity, vocational teachers at Seguin High School in Texas accomplished the goal.

Frustrated that academic teachers who had been on campus for 20 years never had stepped into the vocational classrooms, three enterprising vocational teachers proposed a novel idea: guided tours of the vocational department for all faculty, staff and administrators.

Then marketing education coordinator, I presented the idea to our principal, who volunteered himself and three other assistant principals to guide the tours on a teacher in-service day. It was a tremendous show of support for the vocational teachers.

On the appointed day, 120 teacher "tourists" were welcomed in the department with a few facts about vocational education in general and at Seguin in particular. …
