You know it's not your typical group of pharmacists when:

A "special distinguished person of the year" honoree says pharmacy organizations "have been on the wrong side of every major consumer issue" he can remember.

The award's presenter describes pharmacies selling herbal remedies as a "disgrace for pharmacy"

The presenter goes on to say that pharmacy is "almost doomed" anyway, along with medicine, unless national health insurance is enacted.

But expecting the unexpected is what brings dozens of people to the early-morning breakfasts of Pharmacist Planning Service Inc., a gadfly band of public-minded and high-spirited R.Ph.s led by Frederick S. Mayer, retired Sausalito, Calif., pharmacy owner and Drug Topics editorial advisory board member.

PPSI gave its distinguished person award this year to Larry D. Sasich, a clinical pharmacist and educator who now is a consumer advocate/analyst for Public Citizen's Health Research Group. Focusing on drug information and safety, HRG has butted heads with organized pharmacy over mandatory patient information leaflets with Food & Drug Administration-approved content and on large-scale pharmacy compounding. …
