The biggest liability risk for environmental engineers and consultants is preliminary site assessment, says industry expert Paul Carroccio, "because you can't see very well underground." Mr. Carroccio is vice president of DPIC Companies Inc., the second-largest professional liability insurance provider for environmental consultants, architects and engineers in the United States and Canada.

In order to provide for the growing number of environmental professionals with a product that meets their needs, the California-based provider has just created its own Environmental Consultants Advisory Board (ECAB) composed of a panel of industry experts. The "ECAB convinced us that environmental firms need additional coverage from what is offered in standard professional liability policies," Mr. Carroccio says, who is a professional engineer himself.

"You must know the project and the client," Mr. Carroccio says. While it is always incumbent upon the environmental consultant to anticipate areas of risk, key changes to DPIC's policy provisions will help. These include the elimination of its pollution exclusion, removal of a blanket asbestos exclusion and additional coverage for firms involved in environmental remediation work.
