FHS Offers Formulary for Cash Customers

Now there's a way for community pharmacists to profit from a formulary-management program on behalf of their cash-paying customers.

The program is being rolled out by First Health Services Corp., a pharmacy benefit manager based in Glen Allen, Va., said Albert Wertheimer, v.p., pharmacy/managed care at the PBM.

He pointed out that although half of all pharmacy prescriptions are now accounted for by public and private third-party plans, the other half are still paid for on a cash basis.

His PBM offers the use of its formulary to any community pharmacy that wants to profit from a formulary management program for cash-paying patients.

The way it works is, the pharmacist offers to sign up cash-paying customers in the pharmacy's own managed care program. If the patient agrees, the pharmacist gathers a patient medical history, including information on prescription drugs the patient has used.
