Connecticut to Test New Rx Care Plan

After looking over the crop of pharmaceutical care models on the market, Connecticut pharmacists have decided to pursue a different approach that holds out the promise a of reimbursement for cognitive services without major up-front costs.

The Health Manager is a patient disease and drug therapy management pilot program that will bring managed care organizations, physicians, patients, and pharmacists into the same loop, according to Lynn Hill, director of business development, Health Management Solutions, the Norwalk firm that developed the system. The aim is to improve patient compliance and hold down health-care costs, while paying pharmacists for cognitive services.

Pharmacists will not be required to pay fees up front, buy new software, or extensively remodel their pharmacies to participate in the Health Manager pilot, said Hill. They will, however, need a patient consultation area.

Slated for introduction in June at the annual meeting of the Connecticut Pharmacists Association, the new program was given the green light by CPA's executive committee, said Daniel Leone, executive v. …
