Someone asked me: What is the make-up of a credit professional? Without hesitation, I said credit professionals have to be accountants, lawyers, marketers, psychiatrists, and extremely good communicators. In other words, good business managers.

The need to be knowledgeable about our role has taken on new challenges in a global marketplace where our very existence depends on how our companies are competing.

With advanced technology that is now affecting everyone in the workplace, we must stay current in our management skills and our business knowledge in the industries we serve. But are we?

NACM's affiliates are presenting programs explaining the new bankruptcy bill that was passed by Congress and signed by President Clinton on October 22, 1994. It is now the law. Do we understand its provisions? Take the opportunity to attend these and other educational programs that your affiliate provides for you--our members, owners, and customers.

We are very fortunate as credit professionals to have an organization in our work area that provides us with the tools to do our jobs. But we won't have this opportunity if we do not regularly support our affiliates by using the various services they offer.

During the last several years, many departments been downsized, including accounting, marketing, and even our own credit departments. Due to changes in the way we do business, companies need to cut to remain competitive.

This means fewer members in our association. …
