Deter F. Drucker, a renowned expert on management, stepped away from business management to a topic that has recently been on the top of many people's minds--how to reform government. In the February issue of The Atlantic Monthly, Drucker authored the cover story, "Really Reinventing Government."

The keys to successful reengineering of the government are rethinking and restructuring it. Restructuring is essential for the long-term health of any type of organization, he writes. "Any organization, whether a biological or social, needs to change its basic structure if it significantly changes its size," says Drucker. "Any organization that doubles or triples in size needs to be restructured. Similarly, any organization, whether a business, a nonprofit, or a government agency, needs to rethink itself once it is more than forty or fifty years old."
