The other day a small package came in the mail, and when I opened it it looked like a CD, entitled "Treasures of RCPL." The subtitle on the CD was "Annual Report 1999, Richland County Public Library, Columbia, South Carolina."

What a great idea! A CD for my computer, or maybe just an audio CD annual report. Here's a library that has made its own CD, probably for a computer, with all sorts of images and whatnot, possibly with orchestral background.

Trouble was, I couldn't open the CD case. In the process of wrestling with it I dropped it on the desk and it opened, scattering all these little pages with pictures on them.

Nope, not a CD, but a clever desk calendar, which opens to form a clear plastic holder for the four-inch square calendar, with one page for each month. Each page has a color picture of a library event in 1999, and on the back more information about the event or the Richland County Public Library. …
