During a time when Fort Valley State College was considering more than one type of mainframe, Unicorn's ability to run in different networking environments appealed to the college's Hunt Memorial Library. With Unicorn, the college did not have to consider changing systems to fit the hardware platform.

"Unicorn is a very user-friendly system and one that any student or faculty in our diverse population can understand quickly without prior instructions," said Dr. Carole Taylor, library director. "We plan to network Unicorn so that it will be available to on-campus faculty, staff, and students as well as our off-campus centers. Unicorn will also connect to PeachNet, which is the state of Georgia's telecommunications network, and one that will connect all academic libraries for the purpose of resource sharing."

Sirsi's Unicorn Collection Management System uses a client/server technology which simplifies and improves the process of managing and accessing libraries' holdings. Its UNIX base allows the flexibility of choosing different platforms, all of which operate with the same software. Its modular design enables users to build on the system's core bibliographic and inventory control modules, choosing and configuring the modules according to needs. …
