SPJ Awards Recognize Excellence in the Society and the Profession

Recognizing outstanding achievement in journalism and dedicated service to the profession and the Society is an important part of the Society of Professional Journalists. This recognition comes in part through awards programs established to stimulate high standards and ethical behavior in the practice of journalism.

Deadlines are approaching for many of your Society's annual awards programs, which are described below. For more information about an awards program, contact SPJ at spj@spjhq.org. In the subject of your message, put "awards" and the name of the award of which you are interested. Or call SPJ at 765/653-3333.

Chapter Outstanding Graduate awards: Deadline April 1. Each campus chapter is encouraged to honor its outstanding graduating member on the basis of character, scholarship and proficiency in practical journalism. Outstanding graduates in each chapter are submitted to the national office for recognition, and the Julie Galvan Outstanding Graduate is chosen from these.

* First Amendment Awards: Deadline April

1. These awards recognize extraordinarily strong efforts to preserve and strengthen The First Amendment.

* Sunshine Awards: Deadline April 1. These awards recognizes those making important contributions in the area of open government.

Fellows of the Society: Deadline May 1. This is the highest honor SPJ bestows upon a journalist. It is given for extraordinary contribution to the profession.

# SPJ Wells Memorial Key: Deadline May 1. This is the highest honor that can be bestowed upon an SPJ member. It is given for outstanding service to your Society. Nominations are accepted by chapters or members.

# Ethics in Journalism Award: Deadline May 1. This award honors up to three reporters, editors or news organizations that distinguish themselves by performing in an outstanding ethical manner as defined by SPFs Code of Ethics. …
