Effects of media on society

The student chapter at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock joined with the Arkansas professional chapter to present a panel discussion in March on the effects of the news media on society. Three panelists were journalists and three represented disciplines covered by the media- sociology, psychology, and radio, television and film. Discussion was lively, and 50 people attended.

Both sides of the issue

Two newspaper publishers discussed the pros and cons of corporately- and privately-owned newspapers during a program sponsored by the Auburn University SPJ student chapter. Graham Annett, publisher of the Opelika-Auburn News, and Mike Venable, owner, publisher and editor of The Phenix Citizen, offered their opinions in hopes of attracting more students to follow in their footsteps.

Annett pointed out the benefits of working for a corporately-owned paper. Among them were increased advancement opportunities, a stronger financial structure and excellent training programs. Annett was quick to dismiss what he calls a common myth among the industry concerning a lack of freedom in the corporate world. "When asked, they will advise and assist," he said. The Thomson Newspaper chain owns the Opelika-Auburn News in Opelika, Ala.

Venable has worked for corporate newspapers, but says he found his home at The Phenix Citizen in Phenix City, Ala. Venable focused his argument on the shift in the public's interest from national news to community news. He said these are the "golden days of community journalism." Venable later added, "Privately owned papers are able to seriously create a family."

Job prospects

The Deadline Club, New York City's SPJ pro chapter, planned an April program titled, "Getting Started: This Year's Job Prospects." The question-and-answer panel discussion was organized for young professionals and students about to enter the job market. …
