Angolan Journalist Gets Six Month Sentence

At least four Angolan journalists have been jailed in March and April, some without an opportunity to defend themselves at trial.

Rafael Marques, 28, was not allowed to present defense witnesses at his trial and saw his attorney replaced by a courtordered one. He was convicted of defaming Angola's president in an article and sentenced to six months in jail. He was also ordered to pay $1,000 in fines and court costs.

Marques' sentence was suspended while the journalist appeals the decision to the country's Supreme Court.

The article for which Marques was prosecuted appeared in the weekly paper Agora. Aquiar dos Santos, editor of Agora, was also convicted and sentenced to two months in prison for publishing it. His sentence is also suspended pending appeal.

Judge Joaquim Cangato closed the trial and barred the defense's witnesses from speaking. …
