Smile for July Is Recreation and Parks Month

As the final school bell rings in late June for schools all across the nation this smile-inducing sound also means that kids are running straight over to their favorite park for a summer of fun. Since 1956, Americans have been celebrating National Recreation and Parks Month and as July is here once again, you should be proud to be part of a great tradition that provides exciting programming and activities for kids and people of all ages.

In July we also celebrate National Therapeutic Recreation Week July 9-15. This event, founded in 1984, serves to enhance the public awareness of therapeutic recreation programs and services and expand recreation and leisure opportunities for individuals with disabilities. As leaders in advocating recreation opportunities for all Americans regardless of ability, National Therapeutic Recreation Week is an important element in recognizing that inclusion is a vital component of park and recreation planning and implementation.

This year NRPA offered a full array of activities and programs for our membership to help celebrate these events, including: "Commemorative Citations," "Day of Service" events, "Chalk It Up" contest, "Nickelodeon Big Help" events, the "ActiveParks. …
