Once Again, It's Time to Push Poison Prevention Week

To sports fans, next month means that it's time for the college basketball tournament known as March Madness, but to pharmacists, it means it's time to suit up for the even higher stakes game of poison prevention.

Slated for March 19-25, National Poison Prevention Week has as its theme "Children Act Fast . . . So Do Poisons." The job of poison prevention isn't done, as the number of ingestions or exposures to household medicines and chemicals remains high. The American Association of Poison Control Centers reported that in 1998 alone, nearly 1.2 million children under the age of five fell victim to potentially poisonous substances.

Pharmacists who want to help protect America's kids can tap into several sources of information. The primary source is the National Poison Prevention Week Council, which offers a kit with consumer pamphlets, full-color posters, a poison lookout checklist, a list of poison control centers, and a roundup of poison prevention materials that can be ordered directly from other sources.
